Types of Powder Coating

The powder coating produced by our company mainly include the following types:

Spray Gun Powder Coating

Spray gun powder coating system uses compressed air and electrostatics to apply a fine, dry powder (like polyester or epoxy) onto metal or plastic parts.

Insulating Powder Coating

Insulating powder coating is a specialized dry powder finish applied to metal parts to provide high dielectric strength, preventing electrical short circuits and arcing.

RAL Colour Powder Coating

RAL powder coating refers to a dry pigment finish applied to metal that is matched to the globally standardized European RAL Color System.

Advantages of Powder Coating

Strong coating
Powder coating provides a durable finish that’s far stronger than what liquid paints offer. These coats are known to protect equipment in the harshest environments without compromising on the aesthetics of the finish.

Affordable
Powder coating is also affordable with the application process eliminating many extra steps and drying time that comes with liquid paint. The raw material powder is less expensive than wet paint and can be stored away in far less space than what traditional paint cans would need.

Various colors and finishes
Powder coating offers many colors and finishes. One can also easily have custom colors made by the manufacturer quickly, and there is a broad range of finishes from high gloss to matte.

Low maintenance
Powder coatings require little maintenance after application. Since the coating his highly durable and resistant to corrosion or scratches – there’s never a pressing need to use cleaning solutions or solvents to keep the surface in tip-top shape.

Quick application
Powder coating is applied using an electromagnetic charge. This means there’s no need to wait for the coat to dry before applying another layer while applying the coating. It can all be done in one go with very little waste creation.

Even application
The application of powder coating also results in an even finished horizontal and vertical surface. This is due to the process of spraying and rapid heating to apply the powder coating. With liquid paint, you would run the risk of drips forming.

No toxic fumes
Liquid paints are known to release toxic fumes from volatile organic compounds into the air. With powder coatings, this risk is non-existent or very little, making it a far safer option to use.

Low carbon footprint
Powder coatings are also known to have a low carbon footprint throughout their value chain. This is great for businesses aiming to switch to more environmentally sustainable materials in their manufacturing process.

Recycle friendly
Liquid paints commonly create unwanted waste that needs to be disposed of properly. Powder coatings, however, can be recycled and reused. This makes them a more environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and efficient coating to use.

Greater transfer efficiency
While liquid paint coats have a transfer efficiency of 30% and nearly half of the product evaporates away. With powder coating, you get a 65% transfer efficiency on average, with any overspray recovered to be used again in the future as needed.

Applications of Powder Coating

Applications of Powder Coating

If you’ve ever admired the paint job on your home appliances—refrigerators, dishwashers, washers, dryers, and others—that’s probably not paint. It’s powder coating! Powder coating preserves and protects devices that experience years of use and contact with water and daily wear and tear.

Motor Vehicles

You’ll hear about a car with a new paint job, and it’s often powder coating. This coating offers a sleek and beautiful finish to automobiles. The automotive industry relies on powder coating to protect vehicles from the effects of the sun, weather, road debris, and more.

Outdoor Furniture

Outdoor furniture toils throughout the year, enduring the effects of the sun, precipitation, insects, and more. Powder coating protects metal, plastic, and even wood furniture from rust, UV rays, infestation, and other environmental challenges. This helps it last longer, retain its original color, and reduce the need for maintenance and cleaning.

Architectural Applications

Buildings are often the biggest beneficiaries of powder coating. Window frames, railings, facades, and many other surfaces are protected from the environment, vandalism, and more through powder coating. Many architects and building owners prefer powder coating to paint since you need to periodically re-apply paint, while powder coating stays the same for years or even decades.

Raw Materials for Powder Coatings

Resin
Resin is always present in powder coating. Epoxy and polyester are the two common types of resin. The coating contains either one of the type.

Curing agents
In order to increase the durability and solidify the coating, curing agents are used. They have the ability to bind the coating. Dicyandiamide curing agent is used when the epoxies are present in the coating and primid curing agents is used if coating contains polyesters.

Additives
Another important ingredient of powder coating is additives. A wide range of additives are present, each serving a different purpose. Some of these additives are used to create a hardened finish while others are used to create a matt effect.

Post Additives
Post additives are also very important ingredient of the powder coating, as they are have the ability to prevent the powder from caking. They are added after the powder gets hard and it is broken it small chunks.

Tint Pigments
Tint pigments are also part of the powder coating. They bring the color that is present in the coating. There are two types of pigments, the first one is inorganic, and pigments belonging to this category are mostly dull and pale. The other type is organic, pigments of this form are more vibrant.

Extenders
Extenders or better known as fillers provides coating with an extra layer of durability. They also reduce the glossiness.

Storage Precautions for Powder Coatings
Temperature Control
Temperature plays a critical role in preserving the longevity of powder coatings. For optimal performance, they should be stored in a temperature-controlled environment between 60°F (15°C) and 77°F (25°C).
Humidity Control
Powder coatings are highly sensitive to moisture, which can lead to clumping and cause performance issues such as poor adhesion, curing defects, orange peel, and difficulties in fluidization during spraying. To prevent these issues, it’s essential to store powder coatings in a humidity-controlled environment, ideally within 40%–60% relative humidity (RH).
Protection from Sunlight and Contaminants
Direct exposure to sunlight can overheat powders, leading to premature degradation. Additionally, direct exposure to contaminants like dust, oil, or moisture can compromise powder flow and application quality.

Products Description

Q: How long does a powder coating last?

A: Powder coating typically lasts between 15 and 20 years, offering superior durability and corrosion resistance compared to traditional liquid paint. When properly prepared and applied, it can withstand harsh environmental conditions, UV rays, and heavy wear, with some high-quality applications lasting longer than 20 years.

Q: What is the most common problem with powder coating?

A: Orange Peel Texture.
Poor Adhesion and Peeling.
Pinholes and Outgassing.
Uneven Coverage and Thin Spots.
The Faraday Cage Effect.

Q: Does powder coating ruin the original paint?

A: Powder coating over paint is a safe & sensible solution for a beautiful, long-lasting finish.

Q: Can you powder coat an entire car?

A: Yes, you can powder coat an entire car, but it is a highly specialized, intensive process used mainly for restorations, custom builds, or race cars rather than standard auto body work. It requires stripping the car to bare metal, removing all non-metal parts, and baking it in a massive oven at roughly 400°F.

Q: What do you have to do before powder coating?

A: It's crucial to thoroughly clean the surface by following the most suitable process for pretreatment for powder coating. If you don't follow the cleaning step properly, then contaminants including dirt, oil, rust, or old paint can compromise the integrity of the coating.

We're well-known as one of the leading powder coating manufacturers and suppliers in China, also support customized service. Please feel free to buy high quality powder coating made in China here from our factory.
